Gossiped words

Are fine for the herds

But if they proved true

What would you do?

They found the tavern without much trouble. They simply followed that distinct tavern sound of hollow laughter and merciless chatter. The sun had set. They found it residing near the waterfront beside the dock and bay. The wolves had rushed ahead in their excitement with howls and hoots as they crashed through the tavern’s doors. The patrons loitering outside were amused by this and joined in the howling accompanying it with laughter.

Kai was more interested in the water though. Eyes fixated on it still while they counted their steps to the tavern. Hushing back and forth beneath the wooden deck it bewitched. They reached the wooden walls of the tavern where inside they were met with the one-eyed winks and two tooth grins from the locals. Most of the village’s swarm seemed gathered here and now this evening. Once inside, Kai and friends returned the local’s pleasantries while their senses soaked in the sights, sounds, and smells. Smells of mature oak, milked oats, smoked meats, and fermented ales all tickled their throats and nostrils tantalisingly.

“Go find a table if you can and I’ll grab us some drinks courtesy of the Grey Wolf.” Kai said to excited chum, with excited aplomb.

Before separating though, they took a silent second’s moment to acknowledge and appreciate their journey’s objective end. They then split up and Kai made bearing for the bar. The tavern was indeed lively and full for as early an evening as it still was. But hey, work is done for today, so ya might as well play, and Kai soaked up the pleasant atmosphere after the long, wet days of marching.

Standing within the queues of patrons now, it seemed it would be awhile before being served, so Kai practised the age-old pastime of people watching. Friends, families, co-workers, husbands, wives, even children, all rejoiced together within these tavern walls now.

Kai peered upward to the wood beamed roof which supported the thatch roofing above and the two floors below. It seemed fashioned in the same manner as that of an upside-down boat. Foreign, fascinating. The tavern itself also had a strange feel of being on a boat, as when listened closely through all the chatter, the sea could still be heard underneath, rhythmically gushing back and forth.

“Oi. Oi you there, baldy.” A nearby voice then called.

Kai looked over and saw a scraggy old man standing at the bar gesturing to come over. Despite reluctance Kai walked to the beckoner.

“You were calling me?” Kai asked politely.

“Aye, aye, I twas. Stand yourself in here next to me at the bar and get yourself a drink quicker. The service here is shite.” The old mench said with emphasis on the last two words.

“Oh, thanks.” Kai replied. “That’s very kind of you.”

“Not a’tall.” The old man hiccupped. “Always happy to meet a traveller I am. Where you hailin’ from?”

“Eh, the south.” Kai answered.

“Oh, lovely.” The old man said in the subtle mocking tone of age.
